TOUR DESCRIPTION

Our Capitoline Museum tour is the best way to explore this amazing museum, right in the heart of the Ancient Roman Empire.

Your private guide, an expert in Roman art and archaeology, will reveal the secrets of Roman history by leading you through the magnificent rooms of this museum: nowhere else do history, art, archaeology, architecture and legend merge in such a unique way.

Founded in 1471, the Capitoline Museum can be considered the first museum in the world, and also one of the most beautiful. Even though it hosts one of the most important collections of Roman archaeology, it can be considered an off-the-beaten-path museum since it’s not nearly as crowded as the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. In fact, visiting the Capitoline Museum is the best way to complete your journey through Roman history after you have seen the most famous Ancient Roman sights. The buildings that host its unique collection are masterpieces of architecture, designed by Michelangelo and other great artists; the Capitoline square is also spectacular, and it offers a breathtaking view of the Roman Forum and other beautiful parts of Rome. The Capitoline Museum is full of astonishing ancient Roman artworks, including some of the most famous sculptures of all time. Here you can admire the bronze statue of the she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus; the massive fragments of the colossal statues of Constantine; the magnificent gilded bronze statue of Marcus Aurelius, the emperor-philosopher, riding a beautiful horse: one of the very few monumental metal statues to survive. .

The Capitoline Museum sits on top of the Capitoline Hill, which in ancient times was the religious heart of Rome. This is where the Etruscan kings built the temple of Jupiter, the main Roman god, in the 6th century B.C. The ruins of this massive building are still visible nowadays, and they’re one of the highlights of our Capitoline Museum tour. The temple of Jupiter was also the end point of the triumphal parades, during which the Roman army marched through the city celebrating the most important conquests.
