You have certainly heard of Pompeii, but you have probably never heard of Ostia Antica. That's a shame, since Ostia is a huge archaeological site famous for its impressive and extensive ruins. Unlike Pompeii, though, Ostia is not very crowded and it's only 30 minutes away from Rome.

Our Ostia Antica tour is the perfect way to discover this off-the-beaten-path treasure. You will explore this massive ancient town with an expert guide who will unveil for you the mysteries of this unforgettable site and will teach you about the temples, the bathhouses, the theater, the ancient "restaurants" (thermopolia), the mills, the stores.

This town was the ancient port of Rome, built by the Romans where the Tiber river runs into the Mediterranean sea, and it was the gateway to the capital of the empire. The name of the city of Ostia comes from the Latin word “ostium”, which means both “mouth” and “gate“.

In fact, no name could be more appropriate, since the “mouth” of the Tiber river was also the “gate” through which all kinds of goods (wine from northern Africa, grain from Egypt, oil from Spain), were delivered to Ostia before being transferred to Rome on flat-bottomed boats that were dragged along the Tiber. Traders didn’t only transport vases and marble statues: they also brought their ideas, religions and lifestyles from abroad, which sometimes became very popular in Italy. This is what happened in the case of the Christian and Jewish religions, which developed in Ostia in very early times.

Luckily for us, Ostia is still very well preserved, even though more than 2,500 years have passed since the first Roman settlers built it in order to control the production of salt and the main trading routes in the area. That's why our Ostia tour from Rome is not only an excursion, but also a time-travel experience, and you’ll have the unique chance to live one day as the ancient Romans did.
